Black Velvet (Alocasia)
Plant Care Instructions*
Alocasia reginula ‘Black Velvet’ is a real dark gem. A part of the very exclusive club of plant species with (almost) black foliage, it provides a powerful contrast to a typical green terrarium environment – especially with the silvery white veins that pierce through the leaves. It’s also labelled as a “jewel orchid” for its compact growth, making it one of the few varieties that’s small enough for life in a terrarium.
Ideal temperatures should be approximately 65-75ºF + (18-24ºC +)... closer to 70ºF is best. Grown outside Alocasia must be brought inside when temperatures drop below 55ºF.
Bright light, but no direct sunlight and shaded for a good part of the day in the summer, if it's warm and humid enough. When growing inside, supplemental light and humidity would be appreciated and encourage new, quicker growth.
Like other thick-leaved Alocasia, allow to fully dry between watering. Jewel Alocasia are far less tolerant of moist soil than the other thinner leaf varieties. Good drainage is key.
Use a chunky, fast draining media.
Feed with a diluted balanced fertilizer from spring every 2 weeks and stop at the end of August then start again at the beginning of spring. Can be top-dressed with worm castings.
These can be re-potted every spring but only use a pot one size bigger if it's become very root bound.
These plants like slightly higher humidity levels than many other plants. You may need to raise the humidity levels in a room artificially by placing the plant in a humidity tray with pebbles or use a humidifier.
